Simple Steps for Closing Your Pool

Whether it's the season for swimming or not, you must always protect your pool from stains, corrosion and scale. WIth the right products and a few simple maintenance steps, you can help ensure that your pool is swim ready as soon as it warms up.

Remember, though: Climates vary.  Ask your local authorized dealer for winterizing instructions particular to your region.

Tips for Winter Care

  • Give your authorized dealer a sample of your pool's water so he/she can give you a complete analysis of it. Then you'll be able to use the directions they give you to balance the water in your pool.
  • Clean your pool regularly.  You can do so by skimming it, brushing its walls, and vacuuming its floors. Don't forget to use a cleaner when you scrub pool wall tile and vinyl, and always empty pump and skimmer baskets before you finish your cleaning session.
  • Clean out your filters with a filter cleaner and a degreaser.  Follow the instructions that come with the tools if you don't know how to use them.
  • Shock your pool regularly as specified by the instructions that come with each purchase.  After that, run your pump for a few hours hours.  This will make sure the chemicals are spread through as much of your pool's water as possible.
  • Dump some algaecide in your pool to protect against algae. When that's done, thrown in some metal contaminant removal to eradicate metal contaminants from your pool's water.  As with the shock, run your pump for a bit to disperse the product throughout your pool.
  • Ask your local dealer how much you should lower the water in your pool during the winter.  Then do so.
  • Regularly drain water from your pool's equipment.  Pumps, filters, heaters, chlorinators, hoses and pipes need to be cared for no matter season it is. Ask your dealer if you need to protect your pipes and other equipment with a non-toxic antifreeze. Remember to put away your ladders, offline chlorinators , pumps and skimmer baskets until you start to use your pool again.
  • Cover your pool with a tarp.  This will  keep leaves, dirt and debris out of it.

Your dealer may tell you it's best to keep your pool open during the winter. If this is the case, do the following:

  • Run the pump several hours a day.  If the temperature goes below zero, run it continuously.
  • Maintain your pool at its normal pH, and keep your chlorine levels as low as you possibly can.
  •  Make sure to minimize the amount of leaves, dirt, and debris in your pool.
